The Stereo Views of
N. A. Forsyth

The photographer N.A. Forsyth is known to have visited the "Lake McDonald" area before the establishment of Glacier National Park, Montana.  He published a fine set of stereo views of the area, including many of the Sperry Glacier.  So many different persons are subjects in these sets, it appears that he made at least two, and perhaps three visits to the glacier.

"Hills Rock Ribbed and Ancient as the Sun"

This amazing view partially shows the vast extent of ice at Sperry Glacier.   The subjects are resting near Comeau Pass, a low spot on the ridge connecting Edwards Mountain and Gunsight Mountain about midway down the icefield. .  The view is looking east toward the Logan Pass area.

In this scene the subjects are led along a rope at the very edge of the ice.   The "guide" is seen wearing both sidearm and Kodak.   The Little Matterhorn and Heaven's Peak dominate the background.   The tons of rock refered to in the caption is the assortment of glacial moraine deposits in the mid background.

"A Huge Crevasse in Sperry Glacier, Mont"

The crevasse has always been a popular stereo view. The photographer published another similar scene, apparently taken the same day, dated 1908.  These huge cracks appear in the ice due to it's downslope movement.

Standing on the outwash of Snyder Creek near present day Lake McDonald Lodge, the photographer captures a boating party under somewhat menacing skies.
